Technological Dependence

May 15th, 2008 · 2 Comments

At what point did I become completely dependent on my technology?  I mean, I can remember a time when I didn’t carry  a cell phone.  Sure my life was simpler back then, but even doing some simple tasks today seems all to difficult without the phone.
As these devices have made their way into our lives, [...]

Emailing the Mayors from Boston’s Free Wi-Fi

May 12th, 2008 · 1 Comment

As I promised in last night’s post, I’m using Boston’s free Wi-Fi network to drop a quick email to the Mayors of both Burnaby and Vancouver.  The gist: Free Wi-Fi in urban centres is a great thing.  I decided to include a copy of the email on the blog for anyone who might be interested.
Good [...]

Free Wi-Fi in the Lower Mainland?

May 11th, 2008 · 4 Comments

The city of Boston along with a couple of partners offers free open Wi-Fi in a public area near the harbour.  While the news itself is more than 18 months old, I felt the need to post about it since I only discovered it today.
This is a move by the city of Boston which will [...]

Apple Support Treats Us Like Babies… Sometimes

March 21st, 2008 · No Comments

Please Apple, heed my call.  We’re not all n00bs.
I performed a series of software updates on my computer today.  Apple has learned that some of us would like to know what our update contains, beyond the simple “bug fixes” or “compatibility fixes” that it typically lists with each update.
My ask is simple, whenever there’s a [...]

Advertising on Blogs

February 16th, 2008 · No Comments

This is a topic I’ve been considering for some time now. Many of you (who don’t use an ad-blocker) will have noticed that late last year I began experimenting with placing ads on the blog. The idea behind this was the “get-the-blog-to-pay-for-itself” mentality that most of us go through when we realize that [...]

Justifying Chill Out Spaces

January 29th, 2008 · No Comments

Cross-posted with Miss604.com
So much in today’s world needs to be justified with numbers showing us that there is a quantifiable value for every decision. When a company spends money, more often than not they want to know how spending that money will make them more money. This is the concept of return on investment [...]

Flickr Fight Doesn’t Attribute Photos

January 22nd, 2008 · 4 Comments

Pouring through my ever overflowing RSS reader tonight I came across a post on AppScout by Alan Henry about Flickr Fight.  This is a site that allows you to search for two terms, and then determines how popular the term is based on the number of hits returned in a Flickr search (Google Fight knockoff??).  [...]

Understanding your Nerd…

November 13th, 2007 · No Comments

I realize that the target audience of this blog probably doesn’t need to read this article, but chances are there’s someone in your life who should. I found this essay, The Nerd Handbook, via Wil Wheaton’s blog and found it extremely insightful. Being a computer nerd myself I found several of the items [...]

Project “Gutsy Gibbon” — Adventures with Ubuntu

October 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

I’ve been running a Linux machine at the house for some time now, experimenting with trying to use it for a central file server where I can get at things like music and pictures from any of the computers in the house, and in some cases from over the Internet.
I’ve tried using various incarnations of [...]

Microsoft Agrees to EU’s Anti-Monopoly Legislation… *sigh*

October 23rd, 2007 · No Comments

Since 1998, Microsoft has been in a battle with EU regulators over allegations that they have engaged in monopolistic business practices.  These allegations are similar to the anti-trust suit brought against the Redmond giant in the US Microsoft has now agreed to give up its battle against the antitrust legislation in an effort to stop [...]
