Calling all Podcasters!
Regular listeners to the Global Geek Podcast will know that the microphone I use for my segments isn’t the greatest. To be truthful, it’s a four-year old cheapie that I bought at London Drugs back when I used to actually play games.
So I’m now on the lookout for a replacement… the question is what to get? I’ve been using this headset-based version for some time now, but I’d really like to get something with decent quality. I know Dave has a higher-end setup with a mixer and stuff because he needs to edit the show together. While I don’t think I need to go quite to that level (yet), I haven’t ruled out the idea of a good, standalone USB mic.
I’d like to come to a decision in the next couple of days and try to pick up a newmic before we record this week’s show. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

The better the quality of your mic, the better it’s going to sound over applications like Skype.
You will hear the quality of my mic on GGP#75 when I made a guest appearance on the Global Geek Podcast.
I am using a Rode NT1A (a great quality Australian Microphone)
It might set you back a couple of hundred dollars, but definitely worth it if you can afford the money.

Thanks James. I’ll take a look at that one. The quality in that segment, and on PodcastersEmporium is quite good!

The USB model which will have a similar sound will be the Rode Podcaster.

Keith there are plenty of blog posts out there that say much the same thing - but I found this one that might help and the cost is not that great and the results will be chalkl and cheese compared to what your using now:

I’ll take a look around the web and get you all the info I can! This is just a quick comment while I wait for the show to encode.

We have a bunch of Shure SM58 mics which we use for the in-studio stuff. For outside broadcasts we have a Zoom H4 portable recorder which we have used with quite some success.
I also have an iRiver IHP-140 (H140) MP3 player and a Sony ECM-MS907 which works very nicely for portable recording.
